Why we need a flame of hope
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the entry into force of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT). With 189 countries signed up, it is one of the most widely ratified treaties in the world.
The treaty forbids parties from acquiring nuclear weapons and imposes an obligation on the five original nuclear-weapon parties — the US, Russia, the UK, France and China — to fully disarm.
